It is really very difficult to beat the beauty and natural variability that wood flooring offers. Even once you know that you want to use this material, there is a whole variety of species to look at. You might consider maple, hickory, oak, or birch, and if you are looking for a more exotic option you might even consider merbau, jatoba, or tea’k.
Once you have decided on a wood, it is important to know that you have a choice whether you want to use solid wood or engineered wood. Solid wood is just what you would think it is, solid from top to bottom. Engineered wood, on the other hand, consists of a top layer of real wood, bonded to several other layers of wood. This is a very similar option to plywood.
If your choice is solid wood, it can be purchased prefinished or you can finish it on site using unfinished hardwood stock. If you choose engineered wood, know that it is usually purchase pre-finished.
Wood flooring is durable and long-lasting, this is especially true when it is properly maintained. It is also renewable, meaning that it can be refinished several times. It also provides a warm feeling underfoot, different from stone, tile, or concrete.
Wood flooring is susceptible to things like scratches, damage, or squeaks and creeks over time. It does not hold up well to grit, dirt, moisture, or liquids, when not maintained. Changes in humidity can sometimes lead to gaps known as “cupping.”
Lastly, when the floors are finished in place, they require the room to be empty for several days. This is to allow for sanding, staining, and finishing. To learn more about wood flooring, click here.
