Dumbwaiters Are Making a Comeback in Custom Homes

You’ll never guess what builders are starting to add to custom homes in Vancouver WA and other parts of the nation. They are adding dumbwaiters.

Yes, dumbwaiters are making a comeback.  That’s according to an article in The Wall Street Journal, “Dumbwaiters on the rise in new homes and renovations.”

What is a dumbwaiter?

A dumbwaiter is like an elevator, but much smaller. It doesn’t transport people from floor to floor, instead it transports stuff.

Dumbwaiters were popular in the late 19th century especially in larger, more expensive homes. The feature fell out of vogue during the Depression.

Dumbwaiters are apparently on the comeback because more and more homes are going vertical. So the ability to move stuff up and down floors, and not having to lug it up and down stairs, is appealing, particularly to those getting on in years.

Nowadays, a typical dumbwaiter is 3-by-3-by-4 feet and can hold up to 500 pounds. Custom home builders can add one to your home in Vancouver WA starting around $4,000.

That’s still a lot of money for a convenience, but as prices go down look for dumbwaiters’ popularity to surge even more.
