In this article, however, we’re going to suggest some things NOT to do. The following improvements/remodeling ideas probably won’t increase the resale value of your home.

In-ground swimming pools. Swimming pools are expensive and most people don’t want them, especially families with children. They increase your energy bills as well as your insurance. They are also expensive to maintain.

Gourmet kitchens. If you read the aforementioned articles, then you know kitchens are very important. Unless you plan to stay in your home for a long time, avoid gourmet kitchens with super expensive commercial appliances. Instead, remodel your kitchen to keep it in line with your neighbors’.

Whirlpool baths and sunrooms. These additions are not highly sought after and raise energy bills. Adding a sunroom may be wise if you live in area or climate where you need one to stay competitive.

If an addition will fulfill your dreams, then do it. It’s your home. Just keep in mind that even though you love your pool or gourmet kitchen, others may not, or at least they won’t love it enough to pay more for your home.
